Copse Fairy Doors
During the first Covid Lockdown, in Spring 2020, many doors to Fairy homes appeared in The Copse. These varied from entrances to grand dwellings to more modest simple houses and cottages. There was even a pottery house. Children of all ages took great pleasure in discovering the latest additions. Some left food offerings for the fairies and cones for their fires. A map of The Copse showing the whereabouts of the doors was published on Steventon Community Facebook page and families could be seen clutching their map and seeing how many they could spot. At peak, there were around 90 doors. Local adults explained to children that the fairies had always lived in The Copse but only made their doors visible when they really trusted the local human community not to disturb them. As people couldn’t gather indoors in large groups, many families arranged children’s birthday parties in The Copse.
Another feature of that Spring was that children took pleasure in decorating trees outside their houses and down the length of The Causeway. It certainly added to the interest of a walk around the village in particularly difficult times.
Although some doors have been damaged over time, many have been well maintained and still attract interest not just from Steventon residents but from other towns and villages too.
