Our first taxi driver?
Gabe Seary bought an Austin Sixteen after WWII and started run to Steventon’s first motorized taxi service. He had a regular contract collecting the younger children from the Hanney Road camp and was often called upon to take pregnant women to maternity hospitals – although he never charged for that.
He was always keen to repair anything possible and one of his thirteen children remembers being turfed out of her bedroom so that a couple her dad had met could sleep in her bed while Gabe fixed their motorbike.
