In an effort to improve services GWR installed loud speakers were installed in stations and signal boxes along the rail line. In this way it could be reported should a train be running late by making announcements to staff.
An unfortunate side effect was that the loud speakers also broadcast any bad language or risqué jokes told by the staff anywhere along the line.
In a small village like Steventon this caused considerable embarrassment to the staff and anger in the villagers. So much so that residents protested outside the station masters house in Didcot demanding that the loud speaker be removed.
