Miss Bargus
The Bargus family were prominent land owners in Steventon, now remembered in the street name – Bargus Close. Miss Bargus lived at 35 The Causeway and owned nine other cottages from her house up to and including Pound House. Dick Dewe was born at Pound House and still lives there remembers that his dad would collect the rents from these cottages for Miss Bargus but at the beginning of WW II he was too busy so Dick took on the job – at the age of 11.
The rent for Pound House, including the orchard, was 14 shillings and the others, moving towards her house, were 4s 9d, 3s 1d, 3s 1d, 4s, 2s 11d, 3s 1d, 3s 7d and 5 shillings. When Miss Bargus died in 1943 she bequeathed Pound House to the Dewe family.
