The Old Village Hall
In an article in the Steventon News in April 1996 Joan Mills described the old hall and her memories of it. A long room with a stage at one end, male and female cloakrooms and at the end opposite the stage a kitchen with – just – enough space for two people.
There was a ‘turtle stove’ for heating although sometimes boys would climb onto the roof and block the chimney and smoking people out of the hall. The hall was used for teas at events like the school sports days, a youth club, and weekend cinema shows, when the boys would often kick over the girls seats!
When fundraising began for the new hall the committee got around strict licensing laws by running a tombola where the numbers were ‘picked’ by throwing balls into one of Sonny Jacques cake tins that had been lined with numbered egg boxes, thus making it a game of skill rather than gambling.
