Steventon News
Steventon News was launched in 1969 and has appeared monthly since then, giving a fascinating picture of village life, events etc. The first issue was sponsored by Lee Magnum, a village business started by Frederick Lee, originally a blacksmith who ran a forge on the corner of The Causeway and the High Street. Donations from many village clubs and organizations raised £45 enabling the purchase of a gestetner duplicator.
The first print run was for 520 copies – evert page needed the duplicator handle to turn, a job often cheerfully done by Alf Joyce. Six ladies volunteered to take turns to type the copy for the magazine and the distributors of the Church Deanery magazine agreed to deliver a copy to every house in the parish. As the duplicator wore out a grant from SARINC allowed for the purchase of a new state-of-the-art duplicator that allowed photographs to be used. The print run currently stands at 1020 copies per month.
Incredible credit is due to the many villagers who have given time and effort to produce this monthly magazine – and still do.
We admit to having freely plagiarized their archives in this exhibition.
