The 1861 Census shows Arthur's grandfather, Roy Betteridge (born Steventon 1826) - Farmer employer, owner of 437 acres. Employing 14 men/19 boys. Arthur was the son of Jonathan Henry & Agnes Betteridge, farmer and land owner of Hill Farm, Steventon. The eldest of 5 children, Arthur enlisted in the Royal Berks Regiment, 3rd (Reserve) Battalion in Jan 1917 training at Victoria Barracks, Portsmouth. In Feb he was taken ill and was taken to Alexander Hospital, Cosham, Hampshire where he later died of Spotted Fever/Meningitis.
Joseph lived with his wife, Amy Florence (nee West) and young daughter, Doreen May aged 3 years, at the Mill House, Mill Street, Steventon. Arthur’s widowed wife chose a private grave at St Michael's church, Steventon, therefore he has no Commonwealth War Graves Commission Headstone or Memoria.
