The 1st Battalion of the Oxfordshire & Bucks Light Infantry were a Territorial unit. They went to France as part of the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4th Infantry Division with the British Expeditionary Force. In late January 1940, the BEF began integrating the Territorials and the Regular units. The 1st Oxford & Bucks moved to the 143rd Infantry Brigade, 43rd division. During the Second World War, Dunkirk was the scene of the historic evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France in May 1940. Private Sidney Frost would have been deployed in the last rear guard actions to hold up the advancing German 6th Army, gaining valuable time for the trapped BEF to make preparations for Operation Dynamo - the evacuation of Dunkirk 26 May - 4 Jun 1940.

The DUNKIRK MEMORIAL stands a the entrance to the Commonwealth War Graves section of Dunkirk Town Cemetery. It commemorates more than 4,500 casualties of the British Expeditionary Force who died in the campaign of 1939-40 or who died in captivity who were captured during this campaign and who have no known grave.

Sidney was the second son of three boys born to Robert James and Edith Mary Frost. Sidney married Lilian Ann Eatwell, of Hungerford, Berks at Newbury in 1939. Sidney and Lilian were living in Steventon at the time of Sidney’s death - (England & Wales National Probate Calendar lists Sidney's address as 57 Drayton Road, Steventon), this was a clerical error, as it was in fact Abingdon Road. Sidney's widow, Lilian continued to live at 57 Abingdon Road until at least 1965 according to Electoral Rolls for Steventon.
