30-Fairs

Fairs

Fairs have been a regular feature of Steventon life for many, many years. Amongst the families to visit the village are the Stubbs, Edwards, Scarrotts, Masons and Sparks.

Although mostly made very welcome by the village Dick Dewe remembers seeing Frankie Sparks ‘liberating’ a cabbage from his allotment. Dick gave chase until he caught him by the chairoplanes. Although smaller now it was not so long ago that the entire Little Green was filled with stalls and rides. The end of the fair was then marked with a firework display on the Big Green.

Frank Wise also remembered, as part of the build up to the Annual Abingdon Fair their lorries and wagons gathering at the top of Steventon Hill and then making a procession into town with jugglers and acrobats performing en-route.
