The Fox

Described on an 1828 sale poster as ‘a valuable, old established Public House’ the pub would have benefited from the increased trade brought by the railways. In fact, a meeting was held here of the trustees of Abingdon Turnpike Trust in May 1840 to discuss where toll gates should be built to get maximum benefit from this increase in trade. The 1854 Billing’s Gazetteer shows a Joseph Clarke as a victualler and coal merchant at the Fox Inn and Posting House. By 1930 there was a petrol station and car repair workshop in what is now the pub car park.
